THINK IT THROUGH.LIFE

GRADE 2 · TEACHER PILOT KIT

Define the test.
Protect the learner.

A practical guide for one hundred twenty integrated lessons in material properties, structures, heating and cooling, skin, sensory information, protective layers, hygiene, habitats, plants, digestion, circulation, food information, scientific imaging, microbes, transmission, prevention, medicines, refusal, poison help, source evaluation, and design—built around access, safety, replicable evidence, and learner dignity.

LAUNCH CHECKLIST

Prepare the environment before the investigation.

1 · Preview the full week

Read student text, procedures, answer guidance, misconceptions, alternate routes, extensions, and limits before instruction.

2 · Audit every material

Use approved, labeled samples. Review policy, SDS information where applicable, allergies, cleanup, access, storage, and disposal.

3 · Control temperature

Only the teacher conducts heating or cooling demonstrations. No flames, student-accessible hot liquids, unknown substances, tasting, fumes, skin testing, or improvised medical claims.

4 · Build equivalent access

Offer visual, auditory, tactile, AAC, captioned-video, partner, dictation, modeling, and provided-data routes without forcing disclosure.

DAILY RHYTHM · 75–100 MINUTES

10–15Word study, fluency, and vocabulary
15–20Student text and source evidence
15–20Mathematics model and practice
25–35Investigation, construction, or case
10Independent check and teach-back

Split the block or substitute the included dataset. No learning target requires unsafe sensory exposure or manual manipulation.

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Preserve competence. Diagnose the teaching route.

Five evidence strands

Reading/communication; mathematical reasoning; scientific concepts; safe practical application; transfer and revision. Report them separately before any summary.

Class pattern first

Use item-level class patterns to detect unclear instruction, inaccessible materials, or a flawed task. The mean is diagnostic context—not a quota or grading curve.

Application counts

Strong safe performance remains mastery evidence when vocabulary or verbal theory is incomplete. Record the theory gap and teach it through the successful route.

Logical remediation

Document the specific gap, new representation, practice opportunity, learner reasoning, and later transfer. Do not equate compliance, speed, speech, handwriting, or one response mode with understanding.

Suggested performance labels

Independent transfer · Secure in taught context · Developing with support · Not yet observed. A learner needs new evidence and instruction before a consequential decision; being two standard deviations below a class mean is a screening signal, never sufficient evidence by itself.

NON-NEGOTIABLE SCIENCE RECORD

Make uncertainty visible.

  1. Keep prediction separate from recorded result.
  2. Define every tested property operationally.
  3. Preserve every trial, including unexpected outcomes.
  4. Name what changed and what stayed controlled.
  5. Claim reversibility only after observing a relevant return condition.
  6. State the tested conditions, limitations, and next question.
  7. Never label a classroom design as medical, industrial, food-safe, or life-safety equipment.
