Psychosis is not a synonym for “crazy.”
Psychosis describes impaired reality testing, which may involve delusions, hallucinations, or severely disorganized thought or behavior. Schizophrenia is one possible disorder associated with psychosis—not the only cause.

- The person’s exact experience, conviction, distress, safety, functioning, and baseline
- Culture, spirituality, language, developmental history, sleep, mood, trauma, and substances
- Delirium, seizures, infection, metabolic problems, medications, neurological illness, and other medical causes
- The timeline and relationship between psychotic and mood symptoms
Treatment conversations
Care can include medical evaluation, antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy, family education, coordinated specialty care, substance-use treatment, housing and vocational support, and urgent safety care when needed.
