THINK IT THROUGH.LIFE

GRADE 1 · TEACHER PILOT KIT

Teach the system.
Observe the learner.

A practical guide for piloting any of the nine twenty-lesson integrated arcs while protecting accessibility, scientific humility, learner dignity, and demonstrated competence.

LAUNCH CHECKLIST

Prepare once; improve daily.

1 · Read all five days

Preview student text, demonstration limits, answer guidance, alternate routes, and extension before each week.

2 · Audit access

Offer visual, auditory, tactile, AAC, partner, dictation, movement, and model-building routes without making learners disclose diagnoses.

3 · Control equipment

Adults operate lamps and tension devices. No Sun viewing, lasers, dazzling light, painful sound, sensory testing, or clinical diagnosis.

4 · Collect baseline evidence

Use a short unfamiliar text, two number stories, and one explain-or-demonstrate prompt. Do not rank children publicly.

DAILY RHYTHM · 70–95 MINUTES

10–15Phonological awareness, decoding, fluency
15–20Student text and evidence discussion
15–20Mathematics model and practice
20–30Investigation, design, or case
10Independent check and teach-back

Split the block when needed. Quality evidence matters more than completing every activity at one sitting.

ASSESSMENT WITHOUT DEFICIT LABELING

Record what the learner can do—and what teaching route comes next.

Four evidence fields

Reading/communication; mathematical reasoning; conceptual explanation; safe practical application. Never collapse them into one misleading number.

Class pattern

Use class-level item patterns to detect an instructional mismatch. A class mean is diagnostic context, not a quota and not proof that an outlier should fail.

Competence rule

Strong safe application remains recorded even when verbal theory is incomplete. A theory gap triggers another representation, conference, or investigation—not erasure of application evidence.

Remediation record

Document the misconception, new teaching route, learner response, and later evidence. Persistent difficulty triggers support and evaluation under school policy, never automatic blame.

Suggested performance labels

Independent transfer · Secure in taught context · Developing with support · Not yet observed. Add narrative evidence and never diagnose sensory or medical status from classroom tasks.

WEEKLY EVIDENCE

One portfolio, multiple ways to know.

  1. One annotated reading or recorded comprehension response.
  2. One mathematics representation with explanation.
  3. One investigation table preserving all trials.
  4. One model or practical demonstration.
  5. One claim-evidence-condition-limit statement.
  6. One reflection naming a useful strategy and next question.
